WHEREAS, since the Great Chicago Fire of 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored the annual public observance of Fire Prevention Week in October; and,
WHEREAS, the theme this year was “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape” recognizing everyday people who encourage their households to develop and practice a home fire escape plan which can have life-saving impact; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire is dedicated to the safety of life and property and are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and,
WHEREAS, the Fire Safety Education Officer presents fire safety programs and demonstrations to community groups and schools and encourage residents to take a proactive role by getting educated about fire safety; and,
WHEREAS, because 79% of all fire deaths occur in the home and are due to smoke inhalation, the Bureau supplies and installs smoke detectors to any City resident that requests one; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire for their commitment to serving and protecting their fellow residents and we encourage the citizens of Pittsburgh to take personal steps to increase their safety from home fires; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 29, 2019 to be “Fire Bureau Appreciation Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
