Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Domestic Violence Unit for their work in protecting and helping victims; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 22, 2019 to be "Domestic Violence Unit Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we would like to honor the newly established Domestic Violence (DV) Unit of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police which investigates domestic violence cases; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police respond to more than 13,000 domestic violence calls annually and administer more than 1,400 lethality assessment screens every year to victims of intimate partner violence in order to identify victims at high risk of being killed by their partners and refer them for supportive services; and,

 

WHEREAS, in cooperation with advocates at Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, the new unit will increase Pittsburgh Police resources in support of victims of domestic crimes, including those who are victim witnesses in criminal cases and those who file for protection from abuse relief; and,

 

WHEREAS, with additional resources, the Pittsburgh Police will be in a better position to establish and maintain the safety of the victim and provide appropriate legal consequences to the abuser; and,

 

WHEREAS, warning signs that friends, family members and coworkers can look for if domestic violence is suspected include frequent absences, a change in personality, fear of conflicts, passive-aggressive behavior, blaming him or herself for the problems in their relationship, isolation from others, stress-related physical symptoms or of course numerous injuries the victim tries to explain; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Domestic Violence Unit for their work in protecting and helping victims; and,
