WHEREAS, Children/Adult Recreational and Educational Services, also known as the Center That CARES, is celebrating its 20th anniversary on October 17, 2019; and,
WHEREAS, located in the heart of the Hill District, the Center That CARES began as a vision of hope and progress, expanding into a well-known afterschool program thanks to the diligent work of its founder, the Reverend Glenn G. Grayson, who envisioned building a new foundation centered on academic, emotional and psychological progress among the young people of the Hill District community; and,
WHEREAS, since its inception, the Center That CARES has provided educational services and cultural activities to children, youth and young adults year-round, beginning in its inception by serving a total of 6 students in 2000 to nearly 250 students at present day, impacting the lives of over 3000 families throughout its 20 years; and,
WHEREAS, as the Center That Cares grew into a mainstay of the Hill District, professional staff members devised a three tier program with the intention of meeting the needs of each individual child at their current developmental level, thereby ensuring that each child receives adequate attention; and,
WHEREAS, by establishing relationships with other local programs and organizations, the Center That CARES has been able to supply their students with cultural and recreational activities within the program and around the City of Pittsburgh; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 17, 2019 to be “Center That CARES Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
