Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science for 80 years of education and funeral service ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, September 7, 2019, to be "Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science (PIMS), has been providing training for students entering funeral service for nearly eighty years. When first established in 1939, the new training institute was known as the Pittsburgh School of Embalming. The co-founders included Dr. Otto S. Margolis, Prof. John Rebol and Dr. Emory S. James; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1952 the Pittsburgh Institute purchased the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City, and Dr. Margolis assumed the duties as Dean. Years later the decision was made for Dr. Margolis to remain with American Academy with Prof. Rebol and Dr. James remain in Pittsburgh; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2016 Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science added a large classroom, larger faculty office space and two new offices, along with access to Wi-Fi for the student body; and,

 

WHEREAS, change is no stranger to Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science as it continues through the twenty-first century updating its services to its public and to funeral service. It remains a model for other funeral service education programs to follow; and,
