Title: WHEREAS, the Members of Pittsburgh City Council implore the Pennsylvania General Assembly, as well as the Congress of the United States, to pass within the next 30 days common-sense safety measures; and,

WHEREAS, the Members of Pittsburgh City Council implore the Pennsylvania General Assembly, as well as the Congress of the United States, to pass within the next 30 days common-sense safety measures; and,

Body
WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania General Assembly must pass measures which include: banning the use of an assault-rifle and certain ammunitions and accessories as well as the adoption of a "red flag" law which allows, through due process, the court system to temporarily seize firearms from those who may harm themselves or others; and,

WHEAREAS, the Members of Pittsburgh City Council also wish for the Pennsylvania General Assembly to introduce legislation ending state preemption of enactment of locally enforced sensible gun bills and end the prosecution of local legislators who enact such legislation; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh will serve as the model of effective and sensible gun legislation resulting from the passage of a package of bills in April of 2019; and,

WHEREAS, the Members of Pittsburgh City Council demand of Congress an immediate vote on pending gun safety bills in the US Senate, that would authorize the approval of nationwide "red flag" laws, a Federal background database, and the approval of bans on assault-styled weapons and high capacity magazines; and,

WHEREAS, according to a May Quinnipiac poll, 61% of American people are in favor of stricter gun laws overall with 63% of Americans favoring a ban on the sale of semi-automatic assault guns and 81% are in favor of red flag laws, according to a Keating Research survey; and,

WHEREAS, ending automatic authorization of weapons purchases due to the FBI's inability to clear background is a paramount next step and one that would have prevented the death of worshippers at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church; and,

WHEREAS, the need for an updated universal background database has been proven by the death of 26 worshippers in Sutherland Springs, TX who would be with us today ...
