Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Holy Rosary School for their all class reunion; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, August 31, 2019, to be "Holy Rosary School Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Holy Rosary School first opened in 1904 with 377 students mostly white and Catholic. Its peak combined enrollment in elementary and high school was over 1,500 in 1941; and,

 

WHEREAS, during the 1960’s most of the school faculty were Sisters of Saint Joseph, including all principals up Sr. Avangela and Sr. Bridget; and,

 

WHEREAS, from 1968-1977 Monsignor Rice instituted progressive educational approaches to better serve the community and hired three non-Catholic black men as principals; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Extra Mile Foundation was created to subsidize tuition at Holy Rosary and other Catholic Schools in Pittsburgh’s economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in 1989; and,

 

WHEREAS, Saturday August 31st, Holy Rosary School celebrates their All-Class Reunion at the DoubleTree Hotel in Monroeville; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Holy Rosary School for their all class reunion; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, August 31, 2019, to be “Holy Rosary School Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
