Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Sean McDowell for an extraordinary career in broadcasting spanning 4 decades, 25 years of which were with WDVE and wishes Sean McDowell a healthy, happy and productive retirement; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, July 31, 2019, to be "SEAN MCDOWELL DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, after more than four decades of bringing classic rock ‘n’ roll to Pittsburgh radio listeners, Sean McDowell has announced that he is retiring; and,

 

WHEREAS, a graduate of Upper St. Clair High School and the University of Dayton, Sean McDowell is the son of the late Mame and the late iconic TV News Anchorman Al McDowell. At the University of Dayton, he changed his major from journalism to broadcasting to his father’s dismay until he landed his first job in 1978 at WYDD in New Kensington, a free form rock station where the disc jockeys chose the music they played, something that is almost unheard of in the preprogrammed digital age; and,   

 

WHEREAS, using his degree from college for the next 41 years, Sean McDowell worked at FM 97 from 1981-1993 before moving to WDVE where he began what would end up being a 26-year stint as the Afternoon Drive On-Air personality. With a short hiatus last summer to have open heart surgery, Sean has hosted the iHeart Public Affairs Show since 2001, is a supporter of the local Pittsburgh Blues scene, has worked and helped many Pittsburgh charities and currently hosts the 3 to 8PM shift Monday through Friday and a 10AM to 3PM shift on Saturdays; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2016, Sean McDowell was inducted as a member of the Pittsburgh Rock ‘N Roll Legends, Pittsburgh’s version of the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. Married to Cindi McDowell, Sean has plans after retirement to continue his volunteer work with the homeless, veterans, animals and the Food Bank; and,
