Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Michael Ehrmann for his service to the Squirrel Hill Historical Society; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday May 14, 2019, to be "MICHAEL EHRMANN DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Michael Ehrmann is the son of Henry Walter Ehrmann, who grew up in Berlin and later escaped the prejudice of the Nazis, and Claire Ursula Sachs Ehrmann, from Dresden, Germany, who fled to Holland to be a governess when her father was tortured and killed; and Henry and Claire met in Paris and then had to escape to the US through Spain due to the German occupation of France; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael Ehrmann became President of the Squirrel Hill Historical Society (“SHHS”) in 2003, taking over from Terry Necciai, who had founded the Society in 2000; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael Ehrmann has produced monthly programs of history and related topics to the SHHS and the general populace free of charge, generally on the second Tuesday of the month, with many posted online for general viewing; and

                     

WHEREAS, Michael Ehrmann has built the SHHS into a vibrant organization by attending to its organizational needs (insurance, bookings, reservations); keeping the membership list; handling correspondence, and publicity; upgrading its website, which was begun and tended for many years by Patti Hughes; digitizing the entire history of the Squirrel Hill News newspapers; and maintaining a presence at the Squirrel Hill Night Market; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2005, the SHHS produced an Arcadia Images of America book, Squirrel Hill, written by Michael Ehrmann, Laurie Cohen, and Betty Connelly, filled with photographs supplemented with chapter introductions and captions; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2017, the SHHS produced a new book, Squirrel Hill: A Neighborhood History, written by Helen Wilson, Michael Ehrmann, Wayne Bossinger, Dr. Barbara Burstin, and Betty Connelly; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael Ehrmann has decided to step down as President of the SHHS and with his wife, Esta, go to live with their son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in New Jersey. Tuesday, May 14, 2019, will be the last meeting of the SHHS that Michael will host and over which he will preside;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Michael Ehrmann for his service to the Squirrel Hill Historical Society; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday May 14, 2019, to be “MICHAEL EHRMANN DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
