Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Pittonkatonk's contribution to Pittsburgh's vibrant arts scene and commends its commitment to artistic, social, and musical education; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, May 11, 2019, to be "PITTONKATONK DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, throughout its history, Pittsburgh has hosted a vibrant, diverse, and innovative music scene that provides the City with great shows and venues, attracts more and more people to the City, and enhances its reputation as a lively place to make your home; and,

 

WHEREAS, Pittonkatonk, produced by “Pandemic” Pete Spynda, Stephanie Brea, Ben Barson, Nikita Beniaminav, Agnieszka Sornek, Jenifer Davison, Stephan Koledin, Rosemary Barton, Dori Gardner, Brian Kruman, Emily Laughlin, and a host of others, is a community empowerment program and festival of brass and street music, offering listeners of all ages and all backgrounds the opportunity to be a part of Pittsburgh’s proud musical and cultural traditions, highlighting the importance of the arts and music in our community; and,   

 

WHEREAS, for the sixth year in a row, the May Day Celebration brings bands from far and wide, from Peru, Macedonia, Chile, Colombia, Canada, Mexico, Providence, Detroit, California and New York, to Pittsburgh, drawing and celebrating community collaborators from across the City including 1Hood Media, Casa San Jose, Repair the World, All for All, the Latin American Cultural Union, New Sun Rising, Pittsburghers for Public Transit, JFCS, Pittsburgh United, Fair Districts, Assemble, Oakland Planning and Development, and Planned Parenthood to Schenley Park for an entire day of music, food, drink, sharing, and family fun; and,

 

WHEREAS, Pittonkatonk has established multiple educational outreach programs partnering with Sto-Rox High School, Ben Barson of Afro Yaqui Music Collective, and other traveling bands who teach and inspire young performers about the contributions and positive roles musicians play in their communities.

 

WHEREAS, Pittonkatonk’s May Day Brass BBQ will take place at various venues around the city on Saturday May 11, 2019, going all-day at the Vietnam Veteran’s Pavilion in Schenley Park.  There will be no admission charge but monetary and/or pot-luck style food donations are definitely encouraged.
