WHEREAS, the mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community; and,
WHEREAS, the UNcathlon, a project to benefit Special Olympics PA, is a one of a kind team challenge event that unleashes the power of teamwork. An UNcathlete can participate in the physical events of the day and in the fundraising efforts and a non-event participant can help by raising money and staying sweat-free; and,
WHEREAS, embodying the daily goals of SOPA, the UNcathlon is about inclusion and acceptance while presenting 11 decathlon events, making it Unified, Unconventional and Unforgettable ;and,
WHEREAS, each team will take part in 10 physical trials that test speed, strength and endurance, with each team member participating in two events. They are the 400 meter run, the 800 meter run, the 500 meter row, long jump, shot put, 40 yard dash, pull ups, sand bag drag, the 2x200 meter relay and a mystery event with the 11th event being the fundraising.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Special Olympics PA and UNcathlon for providing special Olympians with the opportunity to demonstrate the best of the human spirit; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, April 28, 2019 to be “UNCATHLON DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
