WHEREAS, Sylvia Lawry founded the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the United States and the MS International Federation after her younger brother was diagnosed with the disease in 1945; and,
WHEREAS, Sylvia’s work has resulted in an organization that today has a 50-state network of chapters expending nearly $126 million a year to serve over one million people and which devotes more than $46 million each year to support over 440 research projects internationally; and,
WHEREAS, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Pennsylvania Keystone Chapter will be hosting Walk MS, an annual charity walk, on Sunday, April 14, 2019 with 1 mile and 3 mile options beginning at Point State Park; and,
WHEREAS, Walk MS: Pittsburgh is more than a fundraising event, it is a gathering place connecting people affected by MS with others affected by the disease, family members, healthcare providers, volunteers and the support offered by the National MS Society; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, Finish MS gives athletes participating in the May 4th Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon an opportunity to support people living with MS by registering to Run for a Reason on behalf of the National MS Society, Pennsylvania Keystone Chapter; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Pennsylvania Keystone Chapter for their extensive services and advocacy for all those that seek a world free of MS; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Sunday, April 14, 2019 to be “Walk MS Pittsburgh Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
