WHEREAS, Margaret Campbell (Watson) epitomizes the legacy of the descendants of freed slaves who resettled in Pittsburgh; she was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 6, 1920, and moved to the Hill District with her Sister Bernice and Brother-in-Law James Robinson in 1940; and,
WHEREAS, Margaret has lived a life of hard and passionate work; she scrubbed floors with her Sister, waited tables at Teddy Horne’s restaurant in the Lower Hill District, and worked at West Penn Hospital for 28 years; and,
WHEREAS, Margaret has been a devoted and compassionate resident of the Hill District, caring for seniors in her neighborhood and serving as an usher at the Nazareth Baptist Church for over 50 years; and,
WHEREAS, Margaret married Johnny Watson in 1941 and had three children: Barbara Wooster, Joyce Fowler, and the late Richard Watson; and,
WHEREAS, Margaret and her family will be honored guests at a performance of the Mendelssohn Choir titled “Let My People Go,” at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 7:30pm; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 12, 2019, to be “Margaret Campbell Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
