WHEREAS, Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH); and,
WHEREAS, under Woodson’s pioneering leadership, the Association created research and publication outlets for black scholars through the establishment of the Journal of Negro History in 1916 and the Negro History Bulletin in 1937; and,
WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Woodson initiated the celebration of Negro History Week to correspond with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, which was later expanded to include the entire month of February for people of all ethnic and social backgrounds to discuss the Black experience; and,
WHEREAS, the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of ASALH in Pittsburgh is working to preserve Dr. Woodson’s legacy and the legacy of other early African American advocates, including working with the Downtown Business Branch Carnegie Library to present a program on “Black Migrations” on February 2 and February 16, 2019; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the late Dr. Woodson and the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of ASALH for the work they have done to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community, especially in the creation of Black History Month.
