Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the profound impact of Dr. John M. Wilds' career at the University of Pittsburgh and wishes him the best in his retirement; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, January 3, 2019 to be "Dr. John M. Wilds Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, a Pittsburgh native, Dr. John M. Wilds received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science and Psychology, a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, and a Doctorate in Counseling, all from the University of Pittsburgh; and,

 

WHEREAS, prior to joining the faculty of his alma mater in 1985, Dr. Wilds was Vice President of Human Resources for Warner Cable Corporation of Pittsburgh and served in managerial roles in human resources, employee development, labor relations, and equal employment opportunity at Jones and Laughlin Steel Company; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Wilds’ professional roles at the University of Pittsburgh have included Director of Human Resources, Director of Governmental Relations, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Community and Governmental Relations, and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Community Relations, which is his current position; and,

 

WHEREAS, in his current role, Dr. Wilds fostered relationships with local, state, and federal government representatives, neighborhood groups, non-profit organizations, and the business community and designed and executed the “Be a Good Neighbor Program,” which helps to improve town-gown relations in surrounding Oakland communities. Among countless other accomplishments, Dr. Wilds participated in the University of Pittsburgh’s Community Outreach Partnership Center, which promoted civic engagement, community service, and partnerships and linked University resources to the region; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Wilds served as an adjunct lecturer in human resources management at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz School of Business and School of Information Science and at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy Management at Carnegie Mellon University; and,

 

WHEREAS, outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Wilds has been and still is an active board member and volunteer for many organizations and agencies, including the Center for Hearing and Deaf Services, Family House, POWER, Construction Junction, Oakland Business Improvement District, the Urban League, Regional Funding Development Corporation, Three Rivers Community Foundation, American Red Cross, Pittsburgh Board of Education, the City of Pittsburgh’s Commission on Human Relations, Pittsburgh Human Resources Association, Society for Human Relations Management, and many more; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Wilds is a proud father of two children and grandfather of Joshua, Jacob, and Makiya; and,

 

WHEREAS, after 33 years of service to the University of Pittsburgh, the Oakland neighborhood, and the Pittsburgh region, Dr. Wilds will be retiring from his current position with the University of Pittsburgh Office of Community and Governmental Relations, though he will remain an active member of the community; and,
