WHEREAS, a century ago, at the conclusion of World War I, a memorial War Cross and plaque honoring 226 Calvary Episcopal Church congregants who valiantly fought for their country and 8 members of the Church who lost their lives during the war was installed in the church yard at the intersection of Walnut Street and Shady Avenue in Shadyside; and,
WHEREAS, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of World War I and Veterans Day, Calvary Church has beautifully restored the memorial plaque to recognize the service and bravery of their congregants and the thousands of men and women who have served our nation; and,
WHEREAS, as the state with the fourth most veterans, Pennsylvania has a proud history of military service, and Allegheny County is home to the largest number of veterans in the state; and,
WHEREAS, Veterans Day not only serves as an occasion to remember the courageous men and women who lost their lives fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today, but also as a powerful reminder that veterans and active duty members need our help when they return to civilian life. Many veterans-serving organizations are always in need of volunteers, donations, and other support to carry out their critical missions; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Calvary Episcopal Church and their Rector Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen for their tribute to their congregants who served our country during World War I; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby call upon residents, businesses, and institutions to carry on the Pittsburgh region’s proud history of commemorating and helping the men and women who so bravely fought and continue to fight for our nation.
