Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the Federation of War Veterans Societies, Inc. of Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh for their continued dedication and hard work in making each year's Veterans Day parade a success; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, November 10, 2018, to be "The Federation of War Veterans Societies' Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Federation of War Veterans Societies, Inc. of Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh, will hold its 99th Annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 10:30 beginning on Liberty Avenue at 10th Street and ending at Commonwealth Place; and,

 

WHEREAS, originating as Armistice Day, November 11, 1919 marked the anniversary of the end of World War I, and in 1926, Congress proclaimed that “it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations”; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1954, Congress changed the name of the legal holiday to Veterans Day as a way to honor and recognize all of the Veterans who have dedicated their lives in service to our country from every American war; and,

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh does hereby call upon all its citizens to observe November 11 as Veterans Day and to honor all war veterans living within the City of Pittsburgh and solemnly remember the sacrifice of all those who fought so valiantly to preserve our heritage of freedom; and,
