WHEREAS, founded in 1893 as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh by Henry Phipps, the business partner of Andrew Carnegie, to be a repository of horticultural excellence, the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has evolved from the nation's first teaching conservatory to one of the world's top garden-conservatory programs, securing 90 recent awards for professional excellence; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of the Phipps to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants, to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research and to celebrate its historic glasshouse; and,
WHEREAS, the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, designed by the New York firm of Lord and Burnham, is an historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places and houses elaborate Indoor Gardens, Outdoor Gardens and the Center for Sustainable Landscapes; and,
WHEREAS, Phipps is one of the "greenest" facilities in the world with a Silver Level LEED certification for the Entrance Pavilion, a LEED Platinum Certification for the Greenhouse Production facility and for the Center for Sustainable Landscapes which produces its own energy. Phipps is ranked among the nation's top garden-conservatory experiences today and enriches the community through construction pioneering, regenerative gardens and buildings, ground breaking research, leading edge education and outreach and new cultural opportunities to support the region's renowned quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has undertaken a project called Reimagining Phipps Improvement Program which will feature the restoration of the magnificent Palm Court, crowned after an absence of 81 years by the structure's signature Ogee spire.
