Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate Women In Bio-Pittsburgh and Babs Carryer as she receives the WIB-Pittsburgh P.O.W.E.R. Award for her excellent services to the women in our region; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, October 11, 2018 to be "Women In Bio P.O.W.E.R. event" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Women In Bio (WIB) is an organization for professionals committed to promoting careers, leadership, and entrepreneurship for women in the life sciences. Members belong to biotech and pharma companies, universities and institutes, law and accounting firms, marketing and public relations firms, and CRO's and CMO's.  Over the past 15 years WIB has expanded to 13 chapters nationwide and has become a community representing one of the fastest growing and most influential organizations for women in life sciences; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2012, a local chapter of WIB was launched by five Pittsburgh entrepreneurs and academics who realized that the life sciences sector and the minority demographic of women who work in that sector lacked an appropriate forum to nurture and encourage one another.  The WIB-Pittsburgh mission is to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, education, and mentorship among women across the regions of Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and West Virginia, by providing programming and networking opportunities. WIB-Pittsburgh is committed to increasing the impact of local women on the growth of the region by supporting their careers and professional development; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh chapter of WIB held their fifth annual P.O.W.E.R. (Pittsburgh’s Outstanding Women Entrepreneurs Rally) event on October 11, 2018.  In the fifth edition P.O.W.E.R. 2018 showcased an emerging trend in healthcare - Immunotherapy.  Immunotherapies aim to harness the power of our immune system to treat and cure disease via cellular therapies, vaccines, antibodies and much more.  The speakers shared how immunotherapies are shaping the fields of cancer, transplantation, and others; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Women In Bio-Pittsburgh P.O.W.E.R. Award recognizes life sciences women in transformative roles.  Recipients of this honor have made significant contributions within the Pittsburgh region.  They have achieved the highest level of professional excellence in life sciences and are committed to promoting careers, leadership, and entrepreneurship for women in the life sciences; and,

 

WHEREAS, on the evening of October 11th, the 2018 P.O.W.E.R. Award was presented to Babs Carryer

Director of Education and Outreach at the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute. Ms. Carryer embodies the spirit of P.O.W.E.R. and WIB-Pittsburgh’s mission.  She has materially advanced entrepreneurialism, life sciences innovation, and career growth for women (and men) in our community; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Carryer is a trailblazer and a valuable part of our Commonwealth.  She was instrumental in the development of Carnegie Mellon University’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. As president of Carryer Consulting and NewVenturist blogger, she has helped hundreds of regional businesspeople grow their companies. She co-founded LaunchCyte, a Pittsburgh-based company which has commercialized several university technologies including healthcare solutions. Ms. Carryer has been a mentor for the WIB-Pittsburgh MAPs program.  Mentors, Advisors, and Peers (MAPs) is a program that matches WIB volunteers with WIB members, no matter the stage of their career, who wish to receive career advice. Currently, at the University of Pittsburgh, Ms. Carryer ensures that faculty, students, and partners receive the knowledge, mentoring, and networking opportunities needed to advance their innovations; and,  

 

WHEREAS, Women In Bio-Pittsburgh is committed to promoting careers, leadership opportunities, and entrepreneurship for women in our region. As co-founder of the WIB-Pittsburgh chapter, Ms. Carryer supports this mission passionately. She continuously seeks advancement opportunities for life sciences women and she drives innovation in Pittsburgh. We applaud all she is doing for our organization, our community, and the world; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate Women In Bio-Pittsburgh and Babs Carryer as she receives the WIB-Pittsburgh P.O.W.E.R. Award for her excellent services to the women in our region; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, October 11, 2018 to be “Women In Bio P.O.W.E.R. event” in the City of Pittsburgh.
