Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and support the Mahatma Gandhi Birthday Celebration 2018 and celebrates the Alliance for Humanitarian Initiatives, Nonviolence and Spiritual Advancement (AHINSA) and its partners for celebrating Gandhi's teachings in Pittsburgh, promoting peace, cultural understanding, and non-violence, and helping to build a Pittsburgh for all; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 2, 2018 to be "Mahatma Gandhi Day and International Day of Non-Violence" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on September 30, 2018, the Alliance for Humanitarian Initiatives, Nonviolence and Spiritual Advancement (AHINSA) is hosting the 2018 Mahatma Gandhi Birthday Celebration at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium at the University of Pittsburgh; and

 

WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 2nd as International Day of Non-Violence in honor of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the strategy of non-violence; and

 

WHEREAS, AHINSA seeks to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi as a global humanitarian leader, promote his legacy of peace, and engage youth in understanding and advancing Gandhi’s message of non-violence; and

 

WHEREAS, AHINSA seeks to promote virtues of simple living and harmony with nature and build awareness around the study of Gandhian philosophy; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mahatma Gandhi Birthday Celebration seeks to celebrate rich Indian culture through dance performances, interfaith religious practices, and other events; and
