Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Prof. Vincent F. Lackner, Sr. for his service to his community, his city, his county, and his country; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, September 22, 2018, to be "Prof. Vincent F. Lackner, Sr. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Prof. Vincent F. Lackner, Sr. founded the Sheraden Citizen's Improvement Council in 1963, now known as the Sheraden Community Council; and,

WHEREAS, the Sheraden Citizen's Improvement Council began a Community Day Picnic and Parade which still runs today, an annual Halloween parade, and, with help from the Sheraden Football Association, puts up an annual Christmas Tree; and,

WHEREAS, the council was instrumental in building the new Sheraden Pool in 1974, rebuilding McGonigle Field, refurbishing Sheraden Park, widening the football field, building basketball and tennis courts, placing tot lots around the community, designing a community building and planting trees on many Sheraden streets; and,

WHEREAS, in the late 1960's, Prof. Lackner co-hosted a weekly talk show on Channel 4 which ran for ten years with many guests of interest; and,

WHEREAS, Prof. Lackner's dedication to serve began in the Navy where he served over two years during WWII. After he completed his duty, he enrolled in the University of Toronto where he earned his doctorate in philosophy, courtesy of the G.I. Bill; and,

WHEREAS, he began his teaching career at Duquesne University, where he played a big role in welcoming the European professors to the university which hosted them as they studied. He finished his career at California University of Pennsylvania, where he remained for 30 years, and 23 of those years as head of the philosophy department. He initiated a faculty senate at both universities; and,

WHEREAS, Prof. Lackner was a member of Holy Innocents Parish for over 65 years until its closure. He was a speaker for the diocesan Holy Name Society and was involved in various other religious and educational activities; and,
