Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the dedication of Paul Carey and his commitment to the South Craig Street business district, the Oakland community, and the entire city of Pittsburgh and wishes him the best during his retirement; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 24th, 2018 to be "Paul Carey Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, born in Dublin, Ireland, Paul Carey received a Bachelor of Arts in English and French as well as a Higher Diploma in Education from University College Dublin; and,

WHEREAS, on a post-graduate teaching fellowship in France, Paul met his future wife, Lonnie, and in 1978 they moved to Pittsburgh to live closer to family; and,

WHEREAS, Paul established the Irish Design, known colloquially as the Irish Store, on South Craig Street in the Oakland neighborhood. The beloved store features a rich variety of traditional Irish and Scottish inventory, such as knitwear, clothing, gifts, jewelry, and other items in celebration of Irish heritage; and,

WHEREAS, in an effort to bolster the experience of and promote activity on the burgeoning South Craig Street business district, Paul helped to found the South Craig Association in 1980 and continued this work in partnership with the Oakland Business Improvement District for decades; and,

WHEREAS, known to frequently quote the aphorism "retail is detail," Paul worked tirelessly to organize street cleanings and tree plantings, design and install holiday decorations, and hosted sidewalk sales. Paul played an integral role in the planning and installation of street lights to improve the pedestrian shopping experience on South Craig Street; and,

WHEREAS, earlier this year, Paul announced his retirement after his 40-year tenure as a successful small business owner, proponent for Pittsburgh's continued transformation, friendly neighbor, and beloved member of the community.
