WHEREAS, born in the Brookline community, Sister Lynn Rettinger is a graduate of Seton Hill College with a Bachelor of Arts in History and holds an Elementary Principal Certification and a Master's Degree in Education from Duquesne University; and,
WHEREAS, Sister Lynn has served as an educator in elementary schools in Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Altoona-Johnstown, Baltimore, and Phoenix before becoming the Principal of the St. James School in the West End, Resurrection School in Russellton, and the Transfiguration School in her native Brookline; and,
WHEREAS, for the last thirteen years, Sister Lynn has become a staple in the Shadyside community during her service as the beloved Principal of Sacred Heart School. Her leadership and ability to solve problems have been recognized by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and Oakland Catholic High School, who granted Sister Lynn the "Manifesting the Kingdom Award" and "Leading Lady Award," respectively; and,
WHEREAS, Sister Lynn attended the National Catholic Education Association Principal's Academy, studied the Holocaust at Yad Vashem University in Israel, continues to volunteer at the Southwest Veterans Center, and serves on the Bishop's Pastoral Council; and,
WHEREAS, Sister Lynn created the International Classroom Project to welcome students from around the world and celebrate cultural diversity and is an active participant in District 8 All Schools Meetings, which bring together the City of Pittsburgh and leaders of schools in the 8th Council District to address shared concerns and promote quality education; and,
WHEREAS, Sister Lynn gained notoriety for thwarting a petty theft in Shadyside by confidently approaching a thief who had stolen a wallet from a parked car and muttering the phrase "You need to give me what you have," to which the robber responded "I am sorry" and handed her the item he had stolen; and,
