Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Elaine Ashcom for her years of service to Pittsburgh's students and wishes her the best during retirement. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 5, 2018 to be "Elaine Ashcom Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Elaine Ashcom started her career in administrative roles within Allegheny General Hospital for over 20 years, often working late nights and long hours; and,

 

WHEREAS, when she and her husband Tom welcomed their daughter Hayley 26 years ago, Elaine was inspired to return to school and pursue a career in education. At age 41, she received a Bachelor’s Degree from LaRoche College and a Master’s Degree from Duquesne University, all while raising a toddler and working late nights; and,

 

WHEREAS, Elaine began her new career as a School Counselor, serving Pittsburgh Peabody High School for six years. Here, she sharpened her abilities to educate, advise, and shape the lives of her students; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2009, she accepted her dream job as School Counselor for Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. Elaine worked daily to influence the lives of bright, talented, and sometimes, underserved youth and prepare students for the S.T.E.M.-based jobs of the future; and,

 

WHEREAS, after over a decade of hard work, dedication, and devotion to the lives of students, teachers, and her fellow faculty members, Elaine will be retiring to spend time with Tom and Hayley. She hopes to volunteer and travel during her retirement.
