Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 12, 2018 to be "African American Veterans Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, known as ASALH, established a branch in 2012 in Pittsburgh named for the late Dr. Edna B. McKenzie, educator, historian, prominent advocate for human rights, former news reporter for the Pittsburgh Courier, also the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pittsburgh, and devoted former ASALH lifetime member; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Edna B. McKenzie as an ASALH Executive Council member, was instrumental in advocating for the 1976 presidential proclamation of Black History Month; and,

 

WHEREAS, ASALH’s 2018 national theme is “African Americans in Times of War,” celebrating African American veterans of World War I, which ended 100 years ago, and,

 

WHEREAS, the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of ASALH, sponsored by the Community College of Allegheny County, is holding a special meeting featuring a panel of African American veterans from the Greater Pittsburgh Area including Ronald Saunders, Dr. Grady Roberts, Richard Stewart, Dennis Hughes, Charles Pope, Eric Williams, Louise Walker-Sostre, Gail Manker and Charles Wiggins, along with the DVD “Veterans of Color” produced by the Manasota Florida Branch of ASALH; and, 

 

WHEREAS, this important panel, DVD and meeting will be held on Saturday, May 12th at Allegheny Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County; and,
