Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Dr. Monroe for his dedication to the community and the Metro Urban Institute; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, May 12, 2018, to be "Dr. Johnnie Monroe Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. Monroe is a native of Sumter County, SC. He received his elementary school education from The Goodwill Academy, a Presbyterian parochial school in Mayesville, SC, and he attended high school at Eastern High School in Sumter County, SC. He earned his B.A. from Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry from Eastern Baptist (Palmer) Theological Seminary in Philadelphia; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Monroe is the co-author of two historical works: "Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church: A Journey of Leadership and Service 1868-2008" and "Eastern School: A History of Excellence"; and,

WHEREAS, in May 2016, Dr. Monroe celebrated his fiftieth year of Ordination to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Currently, Dr. Monroe is on the Board of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute; Vice Chair of the National Committee on the Fund for the Self-Development of People and a member of the Advisory Committee for the Metro-Urban Institute at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Monroe also has a strong history of community activism in and around Pittsburgh. He was the Founder and Executive Director of the Schenley Heights Community Development Program; Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Hill District Education Council; Founding President of Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network; member of the Pittsburgh Citizen Police Review Board; member of the Board of Directors of the former Dwelling House Savings and Loan Association; founding member of Clergy and Churches United in the Hill District of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Monroe is the husband of Geraldine Lyles Monroe, and the father of John Gregory (Michelle) Monroe and Nikki Janita Monroe-Hines (Brian). He has five grandchildren: Christyann Newell-Hines, Brevan Amir Hines, Braden Nasir Hines, Sydney Michelle Monroe and Camryn Symone Monroe; and,
