Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Art Hazen for his selfless work in making a difference in the life of a child; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 24, 2018, to be "Art Hazen Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Art Hazen was chosen out of thousands of mentors to be named PA Big Brother of the Year by the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) PA State Association; and,

 

WHEREAS, Art Hazen was newly married when his wife encouraged him to become more involved in the community.  At a BBBS of Greater Pittsburgh “Big for a Day” event in 2008, he met his 7 year old Little; and, 

 

WHEREAS, Art’s Little grew up in a tough area being raised by a single mother whose father was in and out of jail. He had academic difficulties, many anger management challenges, some abuse within his home and struggled to make positive choices, at one point finding himself in the court system; and,

 

WHEREAS, Art has been a great influence on his Little, facing each challenge with his Little, while never judging him. He gave his time taking his Little to sporting events, movies, parks and multiple restaurants; and,  

 

WHEREAS, most importantly, Art gave his time supporting him at court hearings, speaking on his behalf to help move his Little from a juvenile detention to a rehabilitation program where he has learned automotive skills and gained confidence in himself; and, 

 

WHEREAS, because of Art’s influence, his Little has become a pleasant, polite, and respectful young man; and,

 

WHEREAS, in addition to becoming a Big Brother, Art is busy with the company he founded, and his young new family of two. He is also a member of the BBBS Board of Directors and helps to organize Bowl for Kids’ Sake teams, and volunteers and contributes financially to many of the BBBS fundraising events; and,
