Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of April 8th to the 14th, 2018, to be "National Library Week 2018" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April as a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support; and, 

 

WHEREAS, National Library Week is celebrating its 60th Anniversary with the 2018 theme, "Libraries Lead” to illustrate that libraries help individuals, communities, and schools find the resources they need to help them discover their passions and achieve their goals; and,

 

WHEREAS, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has long served as a trusted and treasured institution in our region where librarians and library workers fuel efforts to improve our communities and schools on a daily basis; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2017, nearly 3 million visits were made to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh locations across the City of Pittsburgh and 4.4 million items circulated; and,

 

WHEREAS, libraries support democracy and effect social change through a commitment to provide equitable access to information for all library users regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic status; and,

 

WHEREAS, they work to serve all community members, including people of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, and the most vulnerable in our communities, offering services and educational resources that transform communities, open minds and promote inclusion and diversity; and,

 

WHEREAS, libraries are ever-evolving to best serve our community and fulfill their role in leveling the playing field for all who seek information and access to technologies; and,

 

WHEREAS, libraries transform lives through innovative educational resources and forward-thinking programming; and,

 

WHEREAS, National Library Week 2018 in the City of Pittsburgh encourages all residents to visit their neighborhood library to take advantage of the wonderful resources available to them, offering a world of knowledge and opportunity, and a future of unlimited possibilities; and,
