WHEREAS, Mr. Donald A. Matthews, who resides in the Sheraden neighborhood, retired on January 31, 2018 from Reliant Energy Company Power Plant; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Matthews graduated from Sto-Rox High School in 1976 and continued his education at Community College of Allegheny County where he received an Associate Degree in Industrial Management; and,
WHEREAS, he graduated from Connelly Technical Institute where he received degrees in Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, Electrical Engineering and Masonry; and,
WHEREAS, on November 17, 1980, Mr. Matthews began working as a Coal Plant Operator at Reliant Energy Company Power Plants (formerly Duquesne Light Company) in Cheswick, Elrama and Shippingport locations; and,
WHEREAS, he became certified in Chimney Sweep and in 1985 became a small business owner in the City of Pittsburgh when he founded D&G Chimney Sweeps, which is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Matthews retired from Reliant Energy after a distinguished 37 year career and continues to work at the company he founded. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to jazz music and studying martial arts, where he occasionally competes in tournaments throughout the state; and,
WHEREAS, Donald is married to his wife Gwendolyn of 30 years and they have three children together; Dawn, Donny Jr., and Dion and he has also has an older daughter named Allison. Mr. Matthews has 9 grandchildren; Breia, Kasen, Donald III, Diamond, Christian, Mikala, Mekhi, ShaRod and Aanijah; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Mr. Donald Matthews on his retirement and wish him continued success with D&G Chimney Sweeps; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, March 24, 2018, to be “Donald A. Matthews Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
