Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend all of the organizers of and participants in the Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, in honor of Pittsburgh's Irish community, hereby declare the days of March 11 - 18, 2018 to be "ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE WEEK" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored by the Irish Society for Education and Charity Inc. and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee with Clearview Federal Credit Union as the Grand Marshall Sponsor, Number One Cochran as Vehicle Sponsor, Trebuchet Consulting as Mascot Sponsor, Allegheny County Airport Authority as Reviewing Stand Sponsor, PGT Trucking as Market Square Sponsor, Pennsylvania American Water, Cleaveland Price, Westbanco and Udderly Smooth will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018; and,

 

WHEREAS, this year, the Parade will be dedicated to the celebration of the life of a son of Ireland, U.S. Ambassador to Ireland and former Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney. In addition, the Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will welcome a special guest from Ireland. David Patrick Stanton, the Minister of Justice with a special responsibility for Equality, Immigration and Integration will be visiting Pittsburgh, marching in the Parade and  serving as a political, economic and cultural link between the two countries; and,

 

WHEREAS, The St. Patrick’s Day Parade, first held in 1869 and occurring non-stop since 1950, has grown in size and splendor and now consists of 22,000 participants and draws 200,000 spectators to downtown Pittsburgh, “all Irish for the day”, and has become the oldest and largest parade in the City of Pittsburgh, the second largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States and according to Niche.com, America’s Best City for Partying on St. Patrick’s Day; and,

 

WHEREAS, the magnificent St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebrates Pittsburgh’s Irish heritage and will feature 200 marching units including  bands, specialty acts, floats, elected officials, police,  fire and emergency service agencies and a host of Irish heritage groups. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the highlight of an entire week of Irish heritage events in and around Pittsburgh, featuring area artists, musicians and community groups and is a catalyst for all Pittsburgh to explore Irish heritage, culture, entertainment and cuisine throughout the year. There will be a Pre-Parade Mass at St. Patrick Church in the Strip District and family-friendly fun; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Parade will begin at 10:00 AM at the Greyhound Bus Station, led by this year’s Grand Marshall, Maggie Cloonan, and will include Hibernian of the Year Kevin Conboy and “Miss Smiling Irish Eyes,” Queen Madeline Evans, and her Court, Roisin Sabol and Erin Sheedy; and,
