WHEREAS, we as a nation have had to face the terror and agony of bearing witness to the untimely demise of innocent men and women, young children, teachers, first responders and many more because of inaction; and,
WHEREAS, the loss of life and subsequent bottomless grief has been intolerable and we as a nation have tried to protect our most vulnerable but it hasn't been enough and we cannot continue to fail; and,
WHEREAS, it is time for hope, it is time for reason, it is time for reasonable solutions; and,
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh supports the two pieces of legislation proposed by Pennsylvania State Senator Wayne Fontana. The first seeks to ban the sale and use of 150 different models of military grade semi-automatic assault weapons, as well as magazines that have a capacity of more than ten rounds; and,
WHEREAS, the second seeks to empower family members to petition courts to implement 'Extreme Risk Protection Order' to temporarily suspend an individual's access to firearms if they can prove that the person is threatening harm to themselves or others as is currently done in cases of domestic and sexual assault; and,
WHEREAS, thoughts and prayers are not enough and we must therefore, commit ourselves to
action; and,
WHEREAS, our constituents and our law enforcement deserve better, which is why we must come together to support sensible gun legislation; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that it is the will and desire of the Council of the City of Pittsburgh that all members of the Pennsylvania State Senate show their support for Senator Fontana's proposed legislation; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby commends Pennsylvania State Senator Wayne Fontana for his initiative on passing this crucial, sensible gun legislation.
