WHEREAS, having been a long term resident and dedicated member of Pittsburgh's Bloomfield Neighborhood and a faithful leader, educator, and mentor to many, Sister Mary John Cook has been a member of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit for 60 years; and
WHEREAS, during her 44 years of service to the children and families of Pittsburgh, Sister Mary John Cook served as an elementary school teacher at Immaculate Conception, known as the Saint Maria Goretti School, for eight years before accepting the position of Principle, which she has served in for the past 36 years; and
WHEREAS, over her tenure as principle, Sister Mary John Cook has fostered a sense of commitment and service to others within her student body and the entire Bloomfield community; and
WHEREAS, under her leadership, the Saint Maria Goretti School continues to develop and maintain an environment which is both academically stimulating and promotes inclusivity and diversity, now serving families of every socio-economic level and representing over 30 countries; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mary John Cook has positively influenced the lives of multiple generations of families; and
WHEREAS, the alumni, staff, and faculty of the Immaculate Conception/ Saint Maria Goretti School would like to honor Sister Mary John Cook for her dedication and wisdom over the past 44 years of service; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Sister Mary John Cook for her years of service to the City of Pittsburgh, and congratulate her on celebrating her 60th Jubilee with the Sister's of the Holy Spirit; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 27, 2018 to be "Sister Mary John Cook Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
