Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, February 13th "Pine Cone Derby Trophy Day" in the City of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Friendship neighborhood and Girl Scout Troops 55286 and 52498 for their excellence in recycling efforts, and leading the East End to victory.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Department of Public Works and Diana Ames created a Christmas tree drop-off in 2017 in the Friendship neighborhood in an effort to begin recycling old Christmas trees from the holiday season; and,

WHEREAS, Brian O'Neill, columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and a Northside resident encouraged the Department of Public Works to expand the drop-off program to Northside in 2018; and,

WHEREAS, the Northside Leadership Conference, Inc, the non-profit community development corporation serving the Northside of Pittsburgh, joined with Brian O'Neill and the Department of Public Works to establish a drop-off location and to encourage Northsiders to recycle their Christmas greenery; and,

WHEREAS, other City neighborhoods are encouraged to recycle their own Christmas trees, and Pittsburgh's Northside challenged other neighborhoods to a competition between neighborhoods over which could recycle the most Christmas trees; and,

WHEREAS, the Northside put forth a valiant effort, creating an additional Christmas tree drop-off in the competition to recycle Christmas trees, but the Northside ultimately lost to Friendship, which recycled a total of 337 trees and enlisted the help of Girl Scout Troops 55286 and 52498; and,

WHEREAS, Wood Waste Recycling in Bridgeville grinds up the trees and mixes them with a variety of materials to form compost and mulch, which benefits the environment and helps with sustainability in the City; and,

WHEREAS, recycling Christmas trees saves the City of Pittsburgh fees from landfills, stems the release of methane from landfills, and helps create mulch to be used in City Parks, as well as other tree farms in and around the City; and,

WHEREAS, the success of the Christmas tree recycling program is hereby celebrated with the Pine Cone Derby Trophy For Excellence in the Recycling of Christmas Greenery for the Benefit of Pittsburgh's Parks N' At, to be awarded annually to the community that recycles the most Christmas tree...
