WHEREAS, the week of February 7 through February 14 is recognized as Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Week; and,
WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Children's Heart Foundation, formed in 2008 to fund the most promising CHD research, represents of a large, caring, and supportive community of families who fight congenital heart defects (CHDs) every day and those who have lost their battle; and,
WHEREAS, Children's Heart Foundation is the leading national organization created to exclusively fund congenital heart defect research. To date, the Children's Heart Foundation has funded $9.6 million in research of CHDs, but additional funding efforts are needed, as CHD is still underfunded relative to the prevalence of the disease; and,
WHEREAS, in the United States, a child is born with a CHD every 15 minutes. CHDs are the most common birth defects and the most common cause of infant death due to birth defects; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 25 percent of children born with a CHD will require heart surgery or other interventions to survive, and - sadly - 25% of babies born with a critical CHD will not survive past their first birthday. People with CHDs often face a life-long risk of health problems; and,
WHEREAS, today, more infants with CHDs survive to adulthood because of advancements in research. But more needs to be done to help families burdened by this terrible disease. For that reason, Children's Heart Foundation continues to promote awareness in order to raise funds to save more children's lives, one heart at a time; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh organizations such as Zachary's Mission, Jameson's Army, and Mended Little Hearts, who help us support families while they endure this affliction, are owed a tremendous debt of gratitude for their critical work; and,
