WHEREAS, founded by the Honorable Ralph P. Watson, CLASSIC EVENTS! Public Relations/Marketing, which supports small business development, recognizes a diverse group of trailblazers for their civic, social and humanitarian contributions at the 7th Annual Black History Celebration “Heritage” Dinner with the theme “Recipe for Family Business”; and,
WHEREAS, a posthumous recognition will be given to Herbert Bean, owner of Herbert Bean’s Gulf Station, a respected civic leader and civil rights advocate who created employment opportunities for residents throughout the city of Pittsburgh, provided and delivered food to the needy, volunteered on economic development boards, provided financial assistance to area youth programs via the Kay Boys Club and the YMCA, and helped establish the Freedom House Ambulance Service that originated from the Hill District; and,
WHEREAS, among those to be acknowledged are Lisa M. Coffey and Mary Coffey of All Purpose Cleaning Inc., a full service woman-owned family operated janitorial business with a strong belief in giving “second chances” to ex-offenders of minor crimes, committed to mentoring and empowering young women and encourage single mothers to pursue academic training in their chosen profession; and,
WHEREAS, also recognized is Tyra Good PhD., a tireless keynote advocate for early childhood education, for providing academic, technical and vocational training of youth in underserved communities, a proven leader who has designed and implemented a comprehensive curriculum that successfully aligned with Pennsylvania Department of Education, state academic standards of the Pittsburgh Public School district; and,
WHEREAS, established in 1950, the Percy E. Law Funeral Home will be recognized as the first of five Law Funeral Homes, a family owned and operated business providing comprehensive services to grieving families throughout Western Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Jeremiah Keith Marshal will similarly receive recognition, a seven-year old owner of J-K Haircare, whose line of J-K Haircare products can be found exclusively at his family owned and operated business founded in 2009 by his grandmother Mrs. Teri Marshall, owner/operator of Mirror Image Hair Salon; and,
WHEREAS, CLASSIC EVENTS! 2018 Business Vanguard Award will be respectfully presented to Luther and Roxanne Sewell, owners of Talk Magazine and the LJS Group, which was established in the Hill District and has been in existence for more than 50 years; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 24, 2018 to be “CLASSIC EVENTS! 7th Annual Black History Celebration Heritage Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
