Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby acknowledges the Brookline Block Watch for 25 years of efforts to make Brookline a safe place to live and work; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council hereby declares Tuesday, November 28, 2017, "Brookline Block Watch Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS,  the Brookline Block Watch is a community group of concerned residents of the neighborhood of Brookline, that seeks to ensure that Brookline continues to be a safe place to live and work by reporting crimes and discussing problems that are facing the neighborhood; and

 

WHEREAS, block watch activity, such as focused observation and detailed reporting of crimes can effectively compliment the efforts of law enforcement and help keep communities safe from crime; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1992, Judge Charlie McLaughlin worked to found the Brookline Block Watch to assist law enforcement in making sure that Brookline is a safe neighborhood for all of its residents, and graciously offered his office as the meeting space for the block watch; and

 

WHEREAS, ever since the Block Watch was founded, its members have been diligent in their watchfulness of the Brookline community, and additionally have helped their neighborhood by discussing neighborhood problems and teaching their neighbors ways to better secure their property; and

 

WHEREAS, the Brookline Block Watch has repeatedly proven itself to be effective in its efforts to reduce crime and aid law enforcement, most notably seen in the multiple instances when the Block Watch has provided information to law enforcement which has led to arrests; and

 

WHEREAS, 2017 is the 25th anniversary of the Brookline Block Watch, a milestone on which we can reflect and appreciate the work that the members of the Block Watch has done to ensure the safety of the Brookline community.
