WHEREAS, Major Harris is a Hill District Native and graduate of PPS Brashear High school Class of 1985, and two time awardee of the Pittsburgh High School Football Player of the Year award; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Harris earned a full football scholarship to West Virginia University where he not only captured the nation’s attention with his electrifying play, but garnered ECAC Player of The Year honors for both the 1988 and 1989 seasons respectively, where after he would be a Heisman Trophy candidate finishing 5th in 1988 and 3rd in 1989; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Harris would lead the Mountaineers to an undefeated season in 1988 and first ranking which brought them to the National Championship; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Harris was featured in Sports Illustrated and would become a Consensus All American at quarterback in 1989 and win many of the top national awards for his position; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Harris was the first Quarterback in Division 1 college football history to pass for over Five-Thousand yards and rush for over Two-Thousand yards in a career and in 1990 was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders of the NFL; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Harris was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009 for his statistics, and dynamic, mold-breaking play; and,
WHEREAS, on and off the field, as a player or as a coach, Mr. Harris has inspired many Pittsburgh city youth and kids to focus, achieve their dreams and aspire to be great; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare November 20, 2017 to be “Major Harris Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
