Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Geraldine Roberta Smith Muyango for being a community resource to families in need and for providing hope to those in distress; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 31, 2017, to be "Miss Bert Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

Body

WHEREAS, Geraldine Roberta Smith Muyango, also known as “Miss Bert”  has been a staple in her community for several years connecting families in need within her community to numerous resources; and,

 

WHEREAS, having grown up in Washington County with an abusive father, Ms. Muyango is especially compassionate to those in abusive situations.  She recognizes that many people in her community need a safe haven and services that lead to self-sufficiency, and personal responsibility; and, 

 

WHEREAS, since 1985, while running a 24/7 state-certified day care center with her sister, she has adopted 10 children, many of whom came from homes with domestic violence issues; and,

 

WHEREAS,  in addition, “Miss Bert” volunteers at the diaper bank at New Hope United Methodist Church,  delivers food to families on holidays, acquires winter coats for those in need, and one day hopes to open a women’s shelter; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,  that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Geraldine Roberta Smith Muyango for being a community resource to families in need and for providing hope to those in distress; and,
