Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Standing Firm for providing practical steps for employers to take action and for creating a powerful movement in Southwestern PA to establish work cultures that support victims and are intolerant of abusers; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 24, 2017, to be "Standing Firm Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Standing Firm, a Pittsburgh-based organization, strives to educate regional employers to the effects of partner violence on the workplace while equipping employers with tools to take effective action against such behavior; and,

WHEREAS, Standing Firm helps employers to recognize that they have a role to play addressing partner violence, such as how to respond appropriately and safely in the workplace, in order to support employees within the context of workplace capacity, and to refer employed victims and perpetrators to appropriate community agencies; and,

WHEREAS, by engaging employers, Standing Firm is able to expand the social network of support for victims as well as encouragement for batters to reconsider the consequences of their behavior, in the context of improving the well-being of the workforce and safety of the workplace; and,

WHEREAS, since its inception in 2009, over 360 companies/organizations have become members of Standing Firm , including The City of Pittsburgh, who provides Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) services for employees involved in abusive relationships, either as a victim or an abuser, in addition to training managers and supervisors in dealing with difficult personnel issues; and,

WHEREAS, Standing Firm will host its annual Stand Up For Standing Firm Awards Luncheon to be held on November 1, 2017, where it will honor FedEx Ground as its 2017 Employer Award recipient and Bruce Kraus, City Council President as its 2017 Champion Award recipient; and,
