WHEREAS, food policies impact the health, economy, vibrancy, and diversity of our region; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council convenes food systems stakeholders to network, inspire collaboration, provide leadership development and training, develop comprehensive food policy approaches, and strengthen movement building; and,
WHEREAS, the membership of the Food Policy Council has grown to include over 80 organizations and 130 individuals from various governments, non-profits, co-ops, universities, food and farm businesses within the region; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh has recognized the importance of food policy with the inclusion of the Food and Agriculture Chapter in the new Climate Action Plan and through its interest in improving equitable access to fresh, affordable, and culturally appropriate food; and,
WHEREAS, in May of 2017, along with the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic, the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council published a report on the strengths and opportunities in the Pittsburgh Public School food environment; and,
WHEREAS, through a collaboration with the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council and Urban Redevelopment Authority, the City is working to make urban agriculture more accessible, affordable, and understandable to City officials and the residents of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, in 2011, October 24th was declared as National Food Day to inspire Americans to change their diets and encourage leaders to develop policies that impact food; and,
WHEREAS, in 2017, the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council will be recognizing National Food Day with an outreach tour to decision makers to prioritize food policy concerns; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 24th, 2017 as “Food Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
