WHEREAS, the Hovawart is a medium to large size ancient German breed of dog whose name means “estate guard dog” and which breed originated in the Black Forest region of Germany, first described in text and paintings in medieval times; and,
WHEREAS, the Hovawart is an outstanding watch dog who is sometimes reserved towards strangers. They make excellent family dogs, exhibiting compete devotion to their family. In addition, they are a working dog breed who do exceptionally well in search and rescue, tracking and working dog activities. They possess the ability to think and act independently, are handsome, rugged and protective dogs, possessing a distinctive temperament and loyal disposition; and,
WHEREAS, Hovawarts are one of the longest-lived and healthiest of the working dogs due to the stringent breeding regulations of the International Hovawart Federation. Breeding within the HCNA means that before dogs can be bred, they must pass health, temperament and conformation tests, and their pedigrees must be evaluated for genetic diversity; and,
WHEREAS, The Hovawart Club of North America is a breed club solely dedicated to the betterment and stewardship of the Hovawart within the USA and Canada. The HCNA Fall Specialty Show, Annual Meeting and Temperament Tests will be held at Schenley Park on October 13-15, 2017, with a Meet and Greet, a Conformation Show, Games, Lunches, Presentations, Temperament Testing and Judging; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Hovawart Club of North America on their mission to preserve, protect and steward the ancient German breed of Hovawart dogs and congratulates them on their Fall Show to be held in Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 13, 14, and 15, 2017, to be “HOVAWART DAYS” in the City of Pittsburgh.
