Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh for preserving our region's unique history and providing a platform for young people to participate in historic preservation; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, October 5th, 2017 to be "Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh is home to numerous historic and architecturally significant structures, some of which are threatened with neglect, abandonment, or demolition; and,

WHEREAS, the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh has worked tirelessly to save some of the area's most critically endangered structures and sites; and,

WHEREAS, the Young Preservationists Association's mission is to cultivate and encourage younger voices in historic preservation by educating young people about the value of preservation as a key component of economic vitality and community renewal, training young people to use strategies and tools to preserve local history, and providing opportunities for youth participation in preservation activities; and,

WHEREAS, the Young Preservationists Association has made it their focus to engage and educate the community to advocate for historic preservation; instead of overlooking the voices of neighbors and community leaders, the Association actively seeks them out and encourages them to be a part of the preservation process; and,

WHEREAS, since 2003, the Young Preservationists Association has thrown a Top Ten Preservation Opportunities list release party that highlights some of the most endangered sites that are worth saving for future generations. This year's Top Ten party will be held on Thursday, October 5th, 2017 at Alphabet City in Pittsburgh's Northside; and,

WHEREAS, this year, the Young Preservationists Association honors City of Asylum. In addition, the Top Ten party will focus on the Atlas Theater in Pittsburgh's Northside while also celebrating the Association's 15 year anniversary; and,
