WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Phillips Elementary School, a Pittsburgh Public School, serves children grades K-5 in Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, Phillips has dedicated itself to inspiring a healthy lifestyle among its student body, and providing all with quality physical and health education; and,
WHEREAS, studies have shown that remaining active throughout the day can improve test scores, focus and even attendance rates; and,
WHEREAS, Phillips provides students with a multitude of tools to learn about healthy eating and how to stay active during class, indoor recess, and after school; and,
WHEREAS, as a result of their continued activism and commitment to a generation of healthy children, Phillips has received not one, but two prestigious national awards; and,
WHEREAS, The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has recognized Phillips Elementary as one of America’s 2017 Healthiest Schools and the only elementary school in our Commonwealth to receive the honor; and,
WHEREAS, Phillips has also been recognized by Active Schools, a national movement dedicated to ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity a day, with the Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award; and,
WHEREAS, The Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award is one of this nation’s top distinctions for a K-12 learning institution that focuses on physical education and physical activity; and,
WHEREAS, the health and wellbeing of our nation’s children and young adults is so critical and we must do all we can to make sure that a healthy lifestyle is promoted; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors Pittsburgh Phillips Elementary School for its commitment to promoting a healthy living and learning environment; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 22, 2017 to be “Phillips Elementary School Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
