Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the life and career of Mr. Thomas J. Usher; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 22, 2017 to be "Thomas J. Usher Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Usher has been an irreplaceable leader in the Pittsburgh community for decades; and,

 

WHEREAS, Thomas is a three-time graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering (’65), a Master’s Degree in Operations Research (’66) and a Doctorate in Systems Engineering (’71); and,

 

WHEREAS, Thomas began his career with U.S. Steel in 1966 and held a variety of positions in the Industrial Engineering department until transferring to the firm’s South Chicago Works; and,

 

WHEREAS, Thomas became U.S. Steel’s Director of Corporate Strategic Planning in 1979, Assistant to the President in 1981 and Managing Director - Facility Planning, Engineering, Research and Industrial Engineering for the Resource Development Group; and,

 

WHEREAS, Thomas was appointed Executive Vice President of Heavy Products in 1986, President of U.S. Steel Group and Director of USX in 1991, President and Chief Operating Officer of USX in 1994 and Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer effective July 1, 1995; and,

 

WHEREAS, Thomas retired from U.S. Steel as CEO in 2004 and as non-executive Chairman of the Board on February 1, 2006; and,

 

WHEREAS, Tom has been an active supporter of the University of Pittsburgh, led Pitt’s record-breaking $2 billion “Discover a World of Possibilities Capital Campaign,” currently serves as Emeritus Trustee for Life, and along with his wife, created the Sandra and Thomas Usher Endowed Chair in Melanoma at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute; and,

 

WHEREAS, Thomas was named a “Pittsburgher of the Century” in 1999 and accepted the U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for Excellence for U.S. Steel in 2003 from then-Secretary of State Colin Powell; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the life and career of Mr. Thomas J. Usher; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 22, 2017 to be “Thomas J. Usher Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
