WHEREAS, in 2001 the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted resolution 55/82, thereby declaring September 21st of each year as an International Day of Peace; and,
WHEREAS, consequent to the intent of this resolution, all people, institutions and organizations world-wide are invited to celebrate a day of peace and non-violence by creating their own unique demonstrations for prayer, along with a variety of other spiritual and secular observances; and,
WHEREAS, it is the hope of the United Nations and all participants involved in the International Day of Peace that such aforementioned activities will ultimately work to support a global ceasefire to occur annually on September 21st; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Stan Willott and Mr. Al Snyder, two Pittsburgh residents, have written arranged and recorded "One Day of Peace," a song specifically composed for the International Day of Peace Vigil; and,
WHEREAS, locally, the International Day of Peace will be commemorated and celebrated by a number of activities including but not limited to a Peace Vigil, Peace Poem and Peace Flag contests in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, special programming on PCTV21, awareness events hosted by the Aero National Air Ambulance and Charter, Community College of Beaver County, Davison Design & Development Inc., Freedom Area School District, Sisters of St Joseph, and Wednesday Night Basketball Association; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Bo Mesing, Mr. George D'Angelo, and Mr. Jack Gannon have combined their efforts in order to become a driving force in the commemoration of the International Day of Peace within the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and other surrounding counties, using their time, talents, and sense of commitment to show that Pittsburghers are committed to the practice of peace world-wide; and,
