Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the noble and creative contributions of the Mattress Factory to the City, the state, and the world, through four decades; and, BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, June 16th, 2017, "Mattress Factory Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory was founded in 1977 by a group of artists to support in-residence artists and on-site installation and performance art; and,

WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory is located in Pittsburgh's North Side within nine beautifully renovated buildings which previously sat vacant and unused; and,

WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum and experimental lab featuring site-specific installations created by artists in residence from around the world. The Mattress Factory's residency program also provides important resources and guidance to resident artists; and,

WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory exhibits contemporary and unconventional work from nearly 700 artists who have created unconventional, thought-provoking, and intriguing installations and individual pieces. The Mattress Factory's flexibility and inventiveness allows artists to respond to developments in technology, explore audience interaction, and challenge traditional artistic ideals and practice; and,

WHEREAS, since its founding, the Mattress Factory's exhibitions have presented new works by critically-acclaimed regional, national and international artists and the museum's exhibitions appear in publications like The New York Times, Art in America, Art Asian/Pacific, and the Wall Street Journal, among many others; and,

WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory Education Department has developed outreach programs using installation art to challenge, excite, and motivate students and learners of all ages to engage the world around them in new and creative ways; and,

WHEREAS, in honor of its 40th anniversary, the Mattress Factory has installed a Skyspace art piece donated by acclaimed artist James Turrell, and a major public light display on the roof of its main building that can viewed from all around Pittsburgh; and,
