WHEREAS, Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States, especially with baby boomers. A cross between tennis and ping pong, Pickleball is played on a hard surface the size of a badminton court. It is played either indoors on a wooden floor or outdoors on a tennis court, making Pickleball a year round sport. Games are played as doubles or singles, with doubles being the most popular; and,
WHEREAS, there are currently over 3 million players and more than 4,000 courts in the U.S. with baby boomers making up over 65% of all Pickleball players. The game requires quickness and finesse, as well as excellent hand-eye coordination but less mobility than tennis. It also requires players to concentrate on scoring and server rotation. This all makes Pickleball ideal for older players, especially former tennis and paddleball players, who are looking to stay sharp in body and mind; and,
WHEREAS, the United States Pickleball Association is the governing body of the sport in the United States and will be holding the 2017 Gamma Pickleball Classic in Pittsburgh on June 23, 24 and 25, 2017, hosted by and benefitting the Parkinson Foundation of Western PA. The Parkinson Foundation Western PA actively promotes the sport of Pickleball as a therapeutic exercise for those diagnosed with the disease; and,
WHEREAS, an open tournament for players of all skilled levels, the Pickleball Classic will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and is becoming a major tourism and destination event for the City of Pittsburgh; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the health and wellness advantages of Pickleball as well as the benefits of exercise for baby boomers and those living with Parkinsons and congratulates the USAPA for bringing the 2017 Gamma Pickleball Classic to Pittsburgh; and,
