WHEREAS, the United States Navy protects and defends America on the world’s oceans, is deployed around the world, around the clock and is ready to defend America at all times; and,
WHEREAS, Navy Weeks, coordinated by the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO) are designed to give Americans the opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity; and,
WHEREAS, Navy Week is designed to bring America’s Navy closer to the people it protects , in cities that do not have a significant naval presence with a goal to increase American’s understanding of the Navy; and,
WHEREAS, during a typical Navy Week, which will be held in 14 American cities, there will be 75-100 outreach events that will involve civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity groups. A highlight of Navy Week in Pittsburgh will be that Navy personnel will conduct Navy Stem Days at the Carnegie Science Center and sailors will be interacting with all 8 of the Boys and Girls Clubs in Western PA; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the United States Navy and its Office of Community Outreach for bringing Navy Week to the City of Pittsburgh to engage and educate Pittsburghers about the US Navy; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of June 19-25, 2017 to be “NAVY WEEK” in the City of Pittsburgh.
