WHEREAS, for the last 36 years, Ms. Robin Newham has served in varying capacities for the Ellis School for Girls in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood, including as teacher, dean, director, and head of school; and,
WHEREAS, after her graduation from the University of Pittsburgh, Ms. Newham pursued graduate coursework at Carnegie Mellon University where she taught a drawing class in the pre-college program, in addition to teaching gifted elementary school students within the Pittsburgh Public Schools; and,
WHEREAS, over the course of career at the Ellis School, Ms. Newham has had a remarkable impact on the students and faculty by initiating the Advanced Placement Studio Arts Program, becoming a leader within the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools, greatly increasing enrollment, consistently balancing the school’s budget, and becoming one of only two high school art teachers in the nation to lead the Advanced Placement Studio Arts Table; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Newham’s impact transcends the classroom as she played an integral role in the design and construction of the Hillman Upper School Building and a first-class athletic field on its campus; and,
WHEREAS, during her tenure at the Ellis School for Girls, Ms. Newham has touched the lives of countless faculty, staff members, and students, and her remarkable legacy will continue to live on; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Ms. Robin O. Newham for her extraordinary impact on the Ellis School and the entire city of Pittsburgh and wishes her all the best in her retirement; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare to May 25th, 2017 be “Ms. Robin O. Newham Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
