WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory was founded in 1977 to support in-residence artists and facilitate on-site installation and performance art; and,
WHEREAS, since its founding forty years ago, the museum has exhibited the contemporary and unconventional work of nearly 700 artists in its space on Pittsburgh’s Northside; and,
WHEREAS, the museum’s residency program provides both burgeoning and seasoned artists with the opportunity to create artwork that is unconventional, thought-provoking, and challenging and grants these artists with resources and guidance necessary to thrive; and,
WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory presents permanent and modern artistic displays, creating a museum that is a work of art, in and of itself; and,
WHEREAS, the museum has transformed nine previously vacant or underutilized buildings in Pittsburgh’s Central Northside neighborhood into venues that are cherished by residents of nearby communities, the entire city, region, and beyond; and,
WHEREAS, through its educational programming that encourages artistic expression, the Mattress Factory has engaged over 20,000 community members, teachers, and students; and,
WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory displays artwork created by both local and international artists and has contributed to Pittsburgh’s globally recognized arts and culture scene; and,
WHEREAS, in honor of its 40th anniversary, the Mattress Factory has installed a major public light display on the roof of its space that can be viewed from all around Pittsburgh and a Skyspace art piece donated by acclaimed artist James Turrell; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the creativity and beauty that the Mattress Factory brings to Pittsburgh and celebrates its four decades of success; and,
BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 23rd, 2017 to be “Mattress Factory 40th Anniversary Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
