Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Teacher Lindsay Del Conte and Paraprofessionals Lakeisha Moody and Lamont Chatman for their dedication to their students and honor them for their outstanding service to the autistic community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, May 15, 2017, to be "Room 223 Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the middle school Autistic Support Classroom at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 (AKA 223) ran by Teacher Mrs. Lindsay Del Conte and Paraprofessionals Lakeisha Moody and Lamont Chatman, is an exceptional group of middle school aged students who go beyond the classroom to learn; and,

WHEREAS, in addition to academics, Mrs. Del Conte focuses on service-learning, like skills, and community engagement; and,

WHEREAS, one such community engagement activity is the Blessings in a Backpack program. In September of 2015, the classroom teamed up with Sheraden Kiwanis Club and filled 10 backpacks per week with food for the weekend. In October, 2016 the class received awards through the National Kiwanis Club. They placed 3rd for the "Club Single Service Award" in all of K-Kids International and they were awarded 1st place in Pennsylvania in the same category. Today, Because of many generous donations, they fill 70 backpacks per week; and,

WHEREAS, this year, Mrs. Del Conte opened "Brew Crew Caf?", located in the school, in order for her students to learn vocational and life skills and opened up opportunities for students to practice appropriate social skills with adults and peers. Students are responsible for managing inventory, making deliveries, collecting money and much more; and,

WHEREAS, Mrs. Del Conte also works closely with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police to plan police related field trips, such as tours of the River Rescue Station and Police Headquarters, and to engage the students in the community which provides them with experiences that help to build a foundation for safe community interactions as they approach adulthood; and,
